Cefixime Oral Suspension Dispenser

Pediatric Dosing Information

The current Prescribing Information (PI), for the administration of Cefixime oral suspension (200mg/5mL) for pediatric patients 6 months or older recites a recommended dose of 8.0 mg/kg/day of the suspension. This may be administered as a single daily dose or may be given in two divided doses, as 4.0 mg/kg every 12 hours.1

The PI further describes a suggested dose for ease of administration that has been determined for each pediatric weight range, see table 1. The directions provide for a suggested daily dose based upon a child’s kilogram weight range and not for an individual patient body weight for administration, see table 1. Conversely, this dosing method provides for highly variable perhaps subtherapeutic or supratherapeutic dosing of children between these defined weight ranges; and does not provide a consistent accurate dose of 8.0 mg/kg/day of the suspension as clinically recommended for Cefixime oral suspension for pediatric use, see table 2.

The Dose-Weight Syringe® is specifically calibrated to administer a patient specific dose of Cefixime oral suspension to the optimal dose of 4.0 mg or 8.0 mg of body weight as recommended.
